The Giant Killers

Forest were the first future Football League club to reach the semi finals of the cup back in 1879 but despite their status they were overlooked as potential original members of the League in 1888. The men from the Trent were elected to the top flight of English Football in 1892, winning the cup in 1899 before being relegated in 1908. Most of the next four decades were spent in Division Two with occasional periods in the top flight and it was during this period that Forest recorded a sensational shock victory at Manchester United in 1947.

Two years later Forest fell into the third tier for the first time in their history but their recovery under Billy Walker saw them regain their top flight status in 1957 before Roy Dwight and Tom Wilson secured a second F A cup at Luton's expense in 1959. Forest were still regarded as a traditional Second Division club though and few eyebrows were raised when they went back there in the early 70s. Then Brian Clough turned the team into the best club in Europe, first winning the title in 1978 and following that with consecutive European cups in 1978 & 79. Forest remained a major club until the 90s when they were endured a yo-yo existence between the top two divisions, playing their last elite game in 1999 and then being relegated back to the third tier in 2006. Despite having spent the entire 21st Century outside the top flight, they've still spent more seasons among the elite clubs than in any other division.
